“Behavior Pattern Recognition for School Active Shooters” course primarily focuses on the PREVENTION phase of active shooter incidents.

Who should attend: 
School Resource Officers (SRO’s), School Administrators, School Crisis Safety Team Members, School Board Members, Teachers,  Law Enforcement First Responders, Supervisors and Leadership.

In 2002 as a result of the Columbine School Massacre the United States Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education released the “Safe Schools Initiative” report that studied numerous school active shooter incidents from 1974 to 2000.  This report emphasized that they were not able to establish a “PROFILE” of the typical school shooter however; it did state that in 93% of the active shooter incidents the attacker did display several “BEHAVIORAL PRE-CURSORS” that were similar and concerning to others PRIOR to the commission of the act.

I did not take this course seriously when I signed up for it. I had an eye opener after being involved. I had been so naïve, possibly at the expense of other’s lives. These men did an awesome job waking me up!

Profiling” DEFINED is:  the use of specific characteristics related to race or age or gender, to make generalizations about a person and whether he or she may be or is about to be engaged in illegal activity.

Not only is “profiling” based on the above definition illegal it is minimally and practically in-effective for predicting current or future criminal behavior;  especially related to acts of terrorism or active shooter incidents..  What is effective in regards to criminals, terrorists and specifically the “school attacker” is examining what behavior patterns/pre-cursors or risk indicators are commonly present prior to the school attack being carried out.  The “Safe Schools Initiative” study reported that 81% of school attackers tell someone else about the planned attack PRIOR to it taking place.  Because of this reality emphasis on developing anonymous reporting and investigation protocols of these threats of attacks is also covered.  Not only will  we examine the “behavioral patterns” but we also examine some of the causal factors that lead to violence so that we can PREVENT these attacks before the attacker escalates their behavior to the point of carrying out the attack.

This course DOES NOT focus on trying to establish a “profile” but rather “behavioral patterns” that can be recognized in advance as well as socio-economic risk factors that contribute to “avenger” behavior” escalation and boundary probing behavior by the attacker.  RECOGNIZING “behavioral pre-cursors” is just part of the equation to preventing these incidents.  APPROACHING, INTERVIEWING (passive & targeted), DE-ESCALATION strategies for at risk students or persons that are exhibiting risk indicators is also a significant part of this course through education and practical exercises. A smaller portion of the course provides an overview of a few RESPONSE and AFTER ACTION strategies related to lockdown, lockdown failure and after action response.
