Strategos’ Mark Warren was interviewed by U.S. News and World Report in the aftermath of the San Bernardino shooting.
“Many terrorist attacks are homicidal or suicidal, says Mark Warren, a former SWAT officer who now teaches terrorism prevention and response tactics through Missouri-based Strategos International. Farook and Malik appeared willing to try to get away, before they fought and were killed by police.
“They didn’t stay. They put themselves on a self-imposed timer because they knew the response was coming,” he says. “If they really wanted a body count, they would have stayed in the building.”
The pair reportedly displayed a relative calmness as they left the building, and didn’t get far due to the immediate police response.
“They weren’t scrambling, they weren’t panicked. It wasn’t a blood lust,” says Warren.
